The State of Oklahoma and the Okemah Board of Education require students tot complete twenty-three (23) credits for gradution over a four (4) year period. Fifteen (15) are required courses an eight (8) are electives. Each student will be offered seven (7) courses each year for a possible total of twenty-eight (28) over a four (4) year period.
REQUIRED CREDITS:
4 English: English I or Pre-AP English I
English II or Pre-AP English II
English III or AP English Language and Composition
English IV or AP English Literature and Composition or Concurrent Freshman Composition I and II. (Taken
from an accredited College or University)
OKEMAH BOARD OF EDUCATION POLICY (EHA-R2) STATES THAT EACH ENGLISH CLASS IS A PREREQUISITE FOR THE NEXT AND NO STUDENT MAY BE ALLOWED TO ENROLL IN TWO (2) ENGLISH CLASSES DURING THE SAME SCHOOL YEAR. SHOULD A STUDENT FAIL AN ENGLISH COURSE, THE STUDENT IS GIVEN A CHOICE OF THE FOLLOWING METHODS TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE COURSE:
3 Mathematics: Algebra I (Algebra I taken in 8th grade will count as an elective and the student must take three (3) additional mathematic courses in grades 9-12
Algebra II
Geometry and/or Trigonometry
3 Science: Biology I and any 2 of the following:
Physical Science
Biology II
Chemistry
Zoology
Anatomy & Physiology
AP Environmental Science
Physics
3 Social Studies: Oklahoma History (1/2 credit)
Geography (1/2 credit)
World History (1/2 credit)
Government (1/2 credit)
U. S. History or AP U. S. History (1 full credit)
1 Arts: Band
Art
Humanities
2 Computer: Computer Applications I
Computer Applications II
or Foreign Languages (2 credits) (Not offered at this time)
7 Electives 1 of them has to be an extra Math or Science
1 set of Competencies in Personal Financial Literacy
1 set of Competencies in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) (senior year)
Beginning with the Class of 2025, Oklahoma students must take a 100 question test using the questions from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services website. The law requires that students get at least 60 of the 100 questions correct in order to graduate. See House Bill 2030 (2021).
STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES IF THEY ARE LACKING MORE THAN ONE FULL CREDIT NEEDED FOR GRADUATION. STUDENTS MUST HAVE COMPLETED 22 CREDITS WHICH INCLUDE 14 REQUIRED COURSES.
Pre-AP/AP Course Requirements:
Pre-AP English I: An Advanced score on the 8th grade reading test.
Pre-AP English II: A grade of A or B in Pre-AP English I or on-level English I with recommendation from the student’s
English I Teacher.
AP English Language & Composition: A grade of A or B in Pre-AP English II or a grade of A or B in on-level English II and a
recommendation from the English II Teacher.
AP English Literature & Composition: A grade of A or B in AP English Language & Composition or a grade of A or B in on-
level English III and a recommendation from the English III Teacher.
AP U.S. History: A grade of A or B in freshman and sophomore social studies courses and a recommendation from their
teacher(s).
